ATHENA

Hi, my name is Shiying Sun, the founder of Athena, a teenage girl in the South of England.

I enjoy: photography, playing the piano, playing chess, reading, going out for walks, the sunset.

But most of all I am passionate about computer science. However, I began to notice a pattern everytime I mentioned my passion. I would sometimes get looks or even a small comment or two about 'why would you do that?' whereas none of my male peers got the same questioning.

Furthermore, the disparity of females in my computer science class was astounding with only 8 out of the 50 students doing computer science (only 16%).

After that, I researched into and saw that it wasn't just me and it wasn't just computer science, there's a disparity of genders in all areas of STEM. Then I began to wonder why, and more importantly, how can we fix this?

Thus, came the creation of Athena, a platform to promote, empower and encourage women in STEM one step at a time!
